James Maher is a street photographer from New York City. His website jamesmaherphotography.com, is where I discovered his work not too long ago. At first Photography was a hobby while in college for Maher. However as his passion grew much larger as he learned more about cameras. He took classes and went back to school to study Photography. Now he works as with assisting commercial photographers as well as his freelance work.
A photo that I particularly enjoy by Maher is one that was posted on his website on June 6th, 2011 in the post “Outside of Pianos, Midnight, Stanton and Ludlow, LES”. This photo was shot with a tripod on the Lower East Side of Manhattan at 1/8 at F4.0, ISO 800 (83mm). There are many things that attract me to this photo. For one the subject is completely in focus while the background is extremely busy and out of focus. Maher accomplished this by setting up a tripod in the middle of a street at an extremely low shutter speed. I also really enjoy the lighting on this photo it’s warm and dim, while the highlights are bright and shadows are dark leaving a lot of contrast. It’s really interesting to see a street photographer that takes up close and personal portraits of everyday people in their daily routine and environment.
