I had to take 1,000 photos because it strengthens many of the basic skills I have had to learn in the first few weeks of studying photography in a structured environment. In my case, I was forced to learn through experience the basic controls of my camera, such as aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, as well as learning my way around shooting in RAW. In addition, having to take a large quantity of photographs by a certain deadline forced me to open my eyes more than I ordinarily would to opportunities for photos.
Why do I need to rate all my photos?
Rating my photographs forces me to reckon with the quality of each image. Taking the extra small step to assign a rating to something makes you think about it in such a slightly critical way that you may form a more developed opinion about it. If it isn't what you like, your assigning a rating compels you to think, "This deserves one star because..." instead of just deleting and not thinking critically about your work. On top of that, seeing what you rated highly could tell you about what you gravitate towards in a way that you might not see, or conversely, what you have been doing poorly that you might improve.
