Awol Erizku work addresses the lack of diversity in
classical art. He uses urban subjects and puts them in classical pieces. For
example the “Girl with the Pearl Earring” becomes “Girl with the Bamboo
Earring” by the subject staying true to the original color scheme and pose but
different through the ethnicity and jewelry that represents the different
culture.
He uses a black backdrop because he sees black as being a
very powerful color. Black backdrops allow you to focus on what is there in
front of you and their expression in which is about power and beauty. He feels as if black allows him to control his
subjects in that matter.
