Gene Kim's Photographer: Christian Hopkins

Riddled with depression but with few outlets, Christian Hopkins channels his emotions into his photos that are in way a series of self-portraits regarding his struggles.  His ability to capture the fear and anxiety he feels into slices of time is what attracts me so much to his works; people with depression often have hard times expressing what's going on in their heads, but Hopkins does it in a manner that does not require words.

Emphasizing minimal tones of yellow, green, and blue, Hopkins has the viewers feel discomfort from the first glance, the sort of unnerving frame that keeps your eyes nervously focused on the works.  The dichotomy in the light and the shadow are very obvious, as to hint another being lurking in the corner.  Back on the note concerning self-portraits, Hopkins chooses to keep his physical self a second layer, with his inner demons actually coming alive, focusing on his body language over his body itself.
