Alex Kreher: Jesús Madriñán - Boas Noites

Usually, when you look at party photos you do not look for a piece of art, but wether or not you want this photo to be deleted from Facebook to make sure your girlfriend doesn't break up with you, your boss doesn't fire you or you don't have to do the walk of shame next day at school.
I must admit, I was young and needed the money, too and I did take photos at parties but never got the idea that there might be a more serious photo essay hidden in these wild faces...

Jesús Madriñán did exactly that, he took his camera and an external flash to Spain's rural clubs and took photos of ordinary people who all put on their fun, sexy, strong, tough, smart, cool or you-can't-get-me masks.
Seeing these photos I start to wonder who are these people when the sun comes out? What do they behave like and look like once they took off their fun, sexy, strong, tough, smart, cool or you-can't-get-me masks?

His photos have the look of a glamour fashion photo and the partying people in the background seem as if they were probs or actors faking to party. With the help of his powerful diffused flash he was able to freeze the action within the frame, and he was able to underexpose the ambient light - so that you won't see any disco lights or other distractions, everything is just a dark black with occasional figures popping out with their drinks and their bodies covered in party foam.

In his series you see these beautiful nature shots appearing in between the party portraits. I wonder what the connection is? Do you see any relation between a young person at a club with a lot of drinks intus and then switching to a nature scene on a road side or some bushes?
I hope you can sense my sarcasm.

Again, an inspiring photographer who took the everyday life, the ordinary and saw more than most of us in it.
