Gene Kim: Russ Mills

Trained in the fields of photography, painting, illustration, and graphic design, Russ Mills mixes in all the captivating techniques from each respective specialty and bring more out of his works.  Utilizing computer imaging for his scanned works (paintings, drawings), he adds special effects to emphasize facial features or colors in his characters.  His subjects often cast in surreal environments, the surroundings are enhanced in the way Mills uses extreme contrast to bring out details between the lines and create a more dramatic lighting.

Mills shows exceptional framing and positioning of his portrait figures, perhaps thanks to his training in photography.  The lines become more apparent depending on the balance of the work, as Mills uses the technique of thinning and thickening the strokes to accomodate the weight of the frame. Although very minimalistic in his range of colors, he uses "enough" change between the tones to outline the figures and have the forms shifting back and forth inside the view.
