James Nachtwey was born in Massachusetts on March 14th 1948. He Studied Art History and Political science at Dartmouth college. Nachtwey was infuled by image he saw of the Veitnam war and the American civil rights movement. In 1976 He started working as photography for a newspaper in New Mexico. From there, he began his career as a photojournalist. Nachtwey has traveled all over world documenting wars and social issues.
The military has always been my back up plan if art didn’t work out for me. In some ways I feel like that sort of structured lifestyle would be good for me. I think combat photography pushes people’s creative, physical, and mental limits. James Nachtweys work definatly pushes those limits. He himself becomes part of the experience of his photograph. The results are extremely narrative and powerful images.
