Steve McCurry's photo of this Afghan girl is pretty well known. It appeared on the cover of National Geographic in June of 1985 and is now regarded as the most recognizable Nat Geo cover. Anyways, even though I think this portrait is stunning, I really appreciate his other work because it is so incredibly surreal looking at times. It is all real life though, and that makes it even more magical. He captures some truly amazing things.
There is a really good documentary where Steve McCurry goes back to the refugee camp where he shot the "Afghan Girl" image to try and find the girl in the picture - if you haven't seen it and really like his work you should probably check it out, I haven't seen it in a few years but I do recall him talking a lot about his own photography in the film as well.
