Marlena Artis - Toni Pepe post 10

1) Which of the artist's many technical choices are of interest to you and why?
The first thing that caught my attention was the fact that Pepe and her child are both submerged in water. At least, they seem to appear to be in water or behind the glass containing it. The second thing that caught my attention was her choice of props. Submerged in the water are all objects found in nature. I also appreciate her style of never fully showing the face of herself or her child, the closest is one side portrait of her throughout her series, "The Second Moment". The rest of her photographs in this series, her child's face and herself are mostly hidden. The dramatic colors and lighting also appeal to me as well. Many of her technical choices throughout her other series as well is something that I hope to achieve one day.

2) What do you believe are the artist's conceptual and/or thematic intentions?
I believe this is a story about her own body and also going through motherhood. She depicts herself caring for her child behind or inside the glass container full of water. The second part of her series are shots of her breastfeeding her child and looking after the baby. I feel as if she included all of the leaves and wood to incorporate a sense or idea of mother nature.

3) How do you personally respond to these choices and intentions?
Honestly, all of her technical choices are something that I aspire to achieve one day. She mostly does theatrical photography and incorporates her ideas in such a simple effective way. The cool tones and colors throughout this series particularly is a very influential key to delivering her concept. I feel very calm and at ease looking through this series.
