Emma Doherty- Bas Princen

1.Which of the artist's many technical choices are of interest to you and why?
From Princen's work that i've looked at, he uses a small, simple range of color that brings a sense of serenity and peace to the setting of the photo. A lot of the time, Princen has little to no shadow work and there tends to be nothing going on around or behind the subject. All of these intentions forces the viewer to focus on the geometry and the placement of the architecture. Most of his subjects seems to sit on one flat plan towards the bottom of the frame.
2. What do you believe are the artist's conceptual and/or thematic intentions?
Princen tends to portray simple and peaceful setting of architecture. Although the architecture tends to stand alone, he makes it seem as if the building was meant to be there rather than an afterthought with his use of balanced color. As I said previously, he puts most of his subjects on one flat plan but aligns them with a natural element in the background. It gives off the impression that the man-made structure and the natural elements blend together smoothly or almost "coexist" peacefully.
3. How do you personally respond to these choices and intentions?
I personally enjoy the color and simplicity in his work. I'm interested in architecture photography and see its straightforward intentions to this type of work I enjoy.
