Blake Little manages to use his ability as a portrait photographer to create his new series entitled "Preservation". In this series he uses nude models completely enveloped in honey to make it appear as if his models are actually preserved in amber or some sort of crystal. This unique appearance makes for some startlingly powerful images the likes of which have never been captured before.
While his professional portfolio consists of mostly "normal" portraiture, such as a series on fellow artists and the all present cliche series of hollywood portraiture with models such as Samuel L. Jackson and Jeff Bridges, Little manages to break his own moulds in his most recent work. By using a studio setting and completely controlling the sets and the models and the amount of honey Little makes some truly artistically provocative imagery.
Blake Little's photos really spoke out to me because he manages to make nude images in a way that eludes nudity as it's subject. By including the honey, he takes the focus away from the nudity and instead to the honey, its likeness to amber and the way that the light (which he controls) dances on the newly fleshed models. This new flesh of honey acts totally differently than normal flesh and makes for some terrific reflections and light play. For all of these reasons I chose Blake Little as my artist of the week.
