Gregory Halpern is a photographer born in New York and based out of LA. He shoots a film camera quite masterfully. The brilliant composition in his photos has a serious and gritty feel to it.
The first photo is a landscape that feels slightly over-exposed, which I would imagine is due to a long exposure. The smoothness of the water is an indicator that the shutter was open for quite some time, and its also a very cloudy/foggy day so without that long exposure theres no way the photo would have come out so bright. Such a bright photo and what would otherwise be a dark and gross looking day is an interesting perspective on this city landscape.
The second photo is a portrait that overall just feels right. The depth of field is fairly shallow, so the background is blurred quite nicely and creates some great bokeh. The fence slowly tapers out of focus which is pretty interesting to me, and the shadows that it casts on the subject are fun to look at too. The look of concern on the subject's face reflects the serious tone of the images caused by the exposure and grittiness of the film photography. It just seems like a brilliantly composed and captured shot of somebody in the midst of having a passionate moment.
