Lindsey Mott - Gregory Halpern

Gregory Halpern

The photographs I have chosen are from Gregory Halpern's series "Omaha Sketchbook". The series is shot with a film camera, and each picture is juxtaposed with at least one other photograph, sometimes of the same subject and sometimes completely unrelated. He pays a lot of attention to light sources in how he choses to photograph his subjects.

"Omaha Sketchbook" depicts a variety of people, and I think thats the point. The series contains people from different age groups, races, classes etc, photographed it seems wherever Halpern found them. By naming the project "Omaha Sketchbook" we come to understand that the project is about the city as a whole, and the diversity of people and places within it.

This particular series is extremely relevant to our project because of its juxtaposition of people and landscapes. Halpern blurs the line between portrait and landscape and makes us question the relationship between the two. I really like the soft light that Halpern has on a lot of his subjects, and I'm assuming he achieves this affect by shooting just before sunset.
