Mary Pforr- Artist Study pt. 3
Artist: Richard Rothman
Photo Cred: http://richardrothman.com/
Rothman's photographs capture the entire set scene with a long depth of field. The black and white images emphasize the light in each photograph and the contrast it creates. Given there is no color, there is a greater appreciation for his use of light and the depth of the grey scale it creates.
The closed aperture creates this crisp concrete setting which such clarity it almost seems a bit unreal. While capturing every day situations and subjects in a normal state, there is this wonderful contrast of normality on the subjects with a surreal resulting photograph.
Viewing Rothman's photographs personally gives me a better understanding of how artists make their photographs- anyone could take photos of these people in these settings, but being able to achieve something of this value takes the artistic style and skill of the individual artist.
