Colin Gray's series "In Sickness and in Health" explores his mother's illness and his parents' battle with old age. Gray makes beautifully sad portraits, many of them in low or soft lighting, probably a result of using a slower shutter speed. Gray plays with his aperture, sometimes choosing a very closed aperture like the flower picture, and sometimes using a more open aperture like the street picture.
Gray captures real emotions in his photos. Even though the subjects are his parents and shot in a familiar environment to him, he clearly sets up each photo and manipulates the frame to make the most beautiful and moving picture.
I really like Gray's work. The lighting in each picture is what really interests me. The more I look at his photos I can see the deliberate choices he makes, like placing the food just in the frame to bring in that warm brown tone or placing his mom in between the two poles to bring your eyes straight to her.
