Gregory Halpern's series "Buffalo Pictures" appears to be shot in the winter, with many of the pictures in grey and brown tones. Halpern has a great symmetry in a lot of his photos and I think what makes his photos so strong is the framing. Every object in the frame has its own space and they all work together to make a beautiful picture. Halpern really knows how to manipulate and economy of elements.
Though these pictures are shot in the cold winter months without much color, Halpern still makes pictures with pretty tones and lighting. Halpern takes pictures throughout the town- children, adults, pretty scenes, tough scenes. By doing this, Halpern is able to show a more complete range of this town.
At first I couldn't tell what it was about Halpern's pictures that made them so interesting. They don't have tons of bright color or really striking lighting. The thing about his pictures that makes them so well composed is the simplistic way he frames them and the choices he makes about what to include in the picture and where it should go.
