While I personally preferred Colin Gray's landscape photographs over his portraits, I thought the top image was well composed. Though Gray took the usual approach of placing the subject at the center of the image, the composition of light and dark contrasts is quite well done. I found it interesting how the man's face is not fully revealed to the viewer. In addition, the bright white of his shirt shifting upward to the dark tone of his hair, as well as the left to right shift from light to dark makes an interesting gradient pattern.
Gray does an amazing job of capturing the planes in the lower picture, giving the viewer the sense of the images magnitude. The geometric lines of gold lights connect the planes of the image. This pattern is repeated in the cross hatched lines of the bridges that divide the planes. In addition, the random specs of red light on either side of the bridges break up the primary gold and blue hues.
