Photo Assignment Part 3: Gregory Halpern

Greg Halpern does an excellent job of giving his images a sense of romanticism. In the top image, he centers the tree, yet it's clear that the subject of the image is so much more. Displaying the natural beauty of the tree in the context of a somewhat weathered home and landscape shows an interesting relationship of objects. In addition, while the image is colorful, its colors are softer and more muted, which makes them blend together rather than contrast each other.

The second image displays the same somewhat muted tones. However, Halpern still captures a beautiful repetition of blues and grays, tying in the color of the pen in the man's pocket with his eye color and the blue car in the right corner. The frame of gray tones in the background also tie in to the man's gray hair, while serving as a frame for his face. Halpern's use of a shallow depth of field gives the background a blurred sense of motion. Tying this motion in with the hairs blowing over the man's face conveys a feeling of stillness amongst surrounding movement that I found particularly interesting.
