Ashley Kronsberg Weekly Artist Post 7
Perfido's work mainly focuses on trying to document authentic moments of emotion and/or humanity. In his segment entitled "Clownsville," he gives his subjects a mask of a clown that allows them to provide almost more human emotions than a bare subject because of the freedom from judgment they are given through the mask. Perfido seems to use one main source of light to illuminate his subjects while still giving them a blacked out background. This could be a flash, however, it seems more likely to be an overhead lamp that he manipulated depending on the needs of the photograph. Perfido also uses a depth of field of between 11-22 (depending on the light provided) considering the detail sewn in the full body portrait and the detail of the couch on the first portrait. Since the subjects are not moving, Perfido can active a deeper depth of field with a longer shutter speed without worrying about motion, which leads me to believe he also used a tripod to scribe the best results. This segment made me feel vulnerable, not only because I was creeped out but also because the emotions and elements portrayed do somehow seem more authentic in some ways. That is to say deposit being posed, the subjects do not appear strained in any way. Giving such a creepy element that kind of emotion deems to question how much more authentic people could be if we were given drastic masks as a way to hide ourselves from judgment as Perfido have his subjects.
