This series is a study- or more so a timeline- of the progression of his mother's illness, his own and his father's grieving, and finding an understanding. Each photo conveys a deep emotional pull for what these three are experiencing. As Gray is finding understanding how to accept the progression of the illness himself while making these photographs, the viewer can see that progression of understanding.
The light and color are used so strategically throughout the series. At times of sensing peace and clarity there is a wonderful use of adding light- at times of discomfort and confusion there is subtraction of light. The use of color throughout the photographs is in scheme with her skin tones- blushes, blues, violets- with some complementary colors used in backgrounds, like in the bottom photograph above.
