Ayana Chavis - Weekly Artist Post 1/4

Alec Soth

1. Soth's photos seem to implement great use of light and color, balancing exposure and a quality that seems almost dream-like. Through his photos (both portraits and landscapes) one can see he uses his focal lens to frame the image to "make" it his own.

2. Thematically, Soth's goal is to provide familiarity to his audience through the mockery of peculiarities. Using what society deems as imperfect to describe our nature as humans and the simple yet complex universal things we find beautiful and necessary. Highlighting color and light in his photos seem to also be a signature of his.

3. Personally, I find Soth's mockery of peculiarities amazing, in fact it's more realistic and aesthetically pleasing to me that any of the images and text I see that strive so hard to seem perfect. That is the beauty in his work. Stretch marks, suicide - things people don't talk about but think about as imperfect and unworthy of our discussion. South puts himself in the very middle of it and makes it...forces you to see it and deal with it.
