Blog Assignment Part 1: Richard Rothman



What intrigued me about these images was Rothman's interesting composition of objects. The top image's subject looks quite small in comparison to the window and dumpster, giving her a sense of lostness and obscurity. Rothman's use of sharp contrasts in blacks and whites bring interest to the image, with each tone differing significantly from dark to light with few gray areas in between. 

Rothman's second image interested me because of the interesting blur effect brought about by the fog. The sharp angles of the house aligned next to the disorderly limbs of the tree make an interesting contrast in shape, as well as color. As tempted as many photographers might be to zoom out or back up and allow the sky to frame the whole picture, I think the fact that the tree extends to the left edge of the image makes for a more interesting composition, making it less stereotypically symmetrical in its framing.
