Ayana Chavis - Weekly Artist Post 3/4

Paul D'amato

Employing color and light, D'amato makes the photos about the people he photographs. Using focus and a shallow depth of field, shows the relationship of the people to their surroundings. One can see how he places people in particular light and color to bring out his subjects.

D'amato's theme is community. Some of the subjects he photographs he has had a relationship with for sometime. Others you can see he has or is trying to have a deeper connection with them, some cry and I think he is crying with them.

I find D'amaro's work extremely important, because I find community and representation important. Using a not to popular area or group of people to portray, is rightful and I applaud him for stepping out of biases whether they be his own or others.
