Blog Post 3- Richard Rothman

Richard Rothman

Richard Rothman focuses on lighting a lot in his photos since he uses black and white. Rothman seems to use a closed aperture to achieve a greater depth of field, especially in his landscapes. Since he shoots black and white, Rothman focuses on contrasts of dark and light. He also pays close attention to his framing and chooses what he wants in the frame and where he wants it.

A lot of Rothman's photos seem like a painting or seem dream-like. The pictures in the burnt/ cut-down forest seem apocalyptic and surreal. The forest photos look like paintings and also have the same surreal quality. The lighting and contrasts in Rothman's portraits place the emphasis on the subject while also highlighting certain features and shapes.

I like the surreal element that Rothman brings to his pictures. His photos are complicated and intricate but still have a simple feel to them which balances them and doesn't make them too busy or hard to look at. I think the black and white contributes to this.
