Ayana Chavis - Weekly Artist Post

Vivian Maier

This particular body of work entitled, "Color" is what one would assume to be a variation from Vivian Maier's usual work. Usually a black and white photographer, using the obvious film camera due to the time the photos were taken. Using perfectly balanced exposure, lighting and color is her focus in these particular photos.

The theme of Maier's photo's seem to be everyday city life of people in the street. Because she became poor in her later years, she became attracted to portraying poverty in her photos. Her free spirit kept her photos always surprising, humorous and always real.

It's great to see an early use of color in such complementary ways. If anything Maier reminds me of Sarah Kaufman's work and how she displays matching colors through out the photo with a contrasting color between them. I am interested in film so to me it's amazing how she is able to adjust the settings of depth of field to "make" the photos here own.
