Donald Weber --Interrogations

In December of last year, this photojournalist elegantly documented the events inside a Ukrainian police interrogation room. The use of photography to show truth is very appealing to me. I quickly get bored with surreal and dreamlike images, but honest photographs give rise to deeper, sometimes more shocking meaning. I suppose a staged piece can have the same result if executed well, but I appreciate this documentary aspect of the field just as much. That's what I'm trying to say.

And it has been confirmed that this images, staged as they may look, are real. This is a little except from an interview with the artist:

I was lucky in that on my very first trip to Ukraine during the Orange Revolution, to come across a fellow who became a friend and a fixer. Through him, I made contacts within the police services. It was actually over many years that the three of us (me, my "cultural guide", and the police) established a relationship of trust to the point that they would consider allowing me to photograph the police interrogation process.

The journey makes the photos more intimate for me, and makes me think about how text influences visuals and vice versa.
Also love the floral wallpaper.

More info as well as the full interview can be found here: http://www.lensculture.com/weber.html?thisPic=11

Enjoy!

  1. It's surreal how he was able to take photographs of these interrogations. Each person shows such an array of emotions from terror to contemplative. It would be interesting to check this book out and see more.
