Loretta Lux - Hannah Nees

Loretta Lux is a fine art photographer known for her "ghost-like" images of children. As a German fine art photographer, Lux attended the Academy of Visual Arts in Munich, graduating with a degree in painting. It was not until years after graduating that she actually picked up a camera. The techniques used by Lux include using her own paintings, as well as her own photographs she has taken in previous times, as the backdrops for these surreal portraits. Lux uses several Nikon DSLR's, computer technology, and studio lighting to create her images. When asked about her technique, Lux says that it takes more than two months to officially finish a photograph, and that she does not have a precise technique she uses repeatedly.

Loretta Lux aims her images towards a Sears-like portrait with a mix of the supernatural. One of the most prominent thematic elements in her work is the story behind childhood. Her inspiration for her photography comes from artists such as Jeff Wall, Cindy Sherman, and Diane Arbus. Lux goes for a porcelain-doll look when photographing the children in her images (who happen to be the children of her friends). She aims her photography towards creating an uncomfortable feeling within her viewers, spawning from the androgyny seen in the young children.
