Bill Cunningham - Natalie Kohlhepp

Bill Cunningham is a fashion photographer for the New York Times and is known for his candid street photography, and his projection of fashion trends. I feel that Cunningham is a great example of a photographer that has had to face his fears to be apart of something he loves.  The paparazzi attract a very negative connotation, it’s a very hard thing to do, I think, to be a part of the paparazzi AND not be seen as this nuisance to whoever is being photographed. And yet, Cunningham has been able to push himself to talk to and photograph and even become excellent friends with strangers, designers, and the like everyday. All the while he is putting out his view of New York fashion despite what other magazines and trends are happening on the runway. He very easily has the most accurate record of New York fashion for the past few decades. In the documentary made about him Bill Cunningham New York, (on Netflix Instant), a close friend of Cunningham’s explains, “He is like a war photographer in that, he will do anything for the shot. I’ve been in mid conversation with him and he sees something that is amazing and he has to go shoot it.”  His passion is made so obvious in the time and effort, and thoroughness he puts into his column; did I mention he still doing this at the age of 84!
