Joel Sternfeld - Liesa Collins

Joel Sternfeld primarily uses large- format camera and is known for his fine color documentary prints. He has been published in Time and has works in the permanent collection at the MOMA. Color is an important element in his work. He is also a fan of wide open places with an immense amount of different things to look at and contemplate within the frame. Sternfeld has has a nice mix of portraits and landscapes which in my eyes, is a very successful thing in a photographer. He pays attention to human-altered landscapes and degrade landscapes and has someone write about the images in his books. It is a nice pair of art. Fun fact: one of his landscapes was taken at the Hunt Island cemetery where the homeless of New York are buried.
I think his interest in these landscapes derives from the interest in things taken over and ruined by the human race. The inclusion of people in his work is what confuses me. He is known for his landscapes and the strong undertones that the place has been human touched, so then why include the people instead of making the audience guess or assume? I don't know, oh well. I am admiring the inclusion in some way, though. Joel Sternfeld is a great photographer that leaves much to the imagination.
