Darienne Montgomery- Artist Post 1

David Pace

1.) David Pace is a photographer that has traveled around the world from Cuba, Italy, El Salvador, and Western Africa capturing images of small villages and communities. His main goal through his photos is to bring positive light to places that are usually seen as desolate and poverish by the rest of the world.

2.) I was drawn to these images because of the story that they tell. Most news today is smeared with stories based around war, murder, poverty, chaos, and tragedies. It all begins to paint a rather bleak and pessimistic view of the world that we live in as well as the lives that others are living around the world. I enjoyed Pace's photographs simply that he is setting a different pace (no pun intended) for how cultures different from our own interact and live. There is typically a sad image casted over places such as this by showing famine and the poverty that consume many areas, but what tends to be left out is the life and spirit that many of these communities have. Though they may not live as we do, we have more similarities than we think, such as wanting to joyously bringing in the weekend on a Friday.

3.)  David Pace has spent the past 8 years traveling and photographing this small country in West Africa, Burkina Faso. Majority of his trips have been spent in Bereba, a rural village whose main source of income is cotton and one without running water or electricity. Pace shows in these images that this community is still lively, peaceful, and happy though regardless of their circumstance. However, what they do have is a strong sense of community and liveliness. Everyone turns out for the weekly, Friday dance from teens to parents and relatives.
