Ryan McGinley - Liesa Collins
Ryan McGinley has for years now, completely blown away people with his work. At the age of 25, he was one of the youngest artists to have work displayed at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Now that is a big deal. If it weren't for his daring photographs and so aesthetically pleasing to the eye subjects, he would have never gotten there. In one of his series "Animals," McGinley captured nude models with animals. Some of the shots are disturbing when you think about placement of the animals, but most just make you smile and say "Wow, what a great idea." He chooses very beautiful people in very beautiful locations to picture and they turn out looking like a backdrop of an Urban Outfitters catalog.
McGinley shoots things the way he does because of a lot of different variables. For example, he grew up around friends and family that promoted a lot of graffiti, skateboarding, art, music, and writing. The perfect combination of art and bad-assery if you ask me. His mentors were all artists and that led him to apply to Parsons School of Design as a graphic design major. With such an education in design in such an influential city, the gorgeous photographs were bound to follow. McGinley's intent for his photographs comes from and is powered by his background. I think he really wanted to be noticed with choosing animals to shoot with nude models because just anyone can shoot only nudes and just anyone can shoot animals.
