Edward Steichen (1879-1973) was reconized as the first modern fashion photographer. His photos were featured in the magazine Camera Work(1903-1917). He learned the technical intricacies of the gum bichromate process, which was popular amongst French artists.Steichen varied his subject matter from landscape, to cityscape and then portrait photography, where he thrived.

The Pond-Moonlight (1904) was one of the most famous prints produced by Steichen. It appears to be a colored print, but it actually colored gem used to create the soft hues of blues and greens. There are three prints of The Pond- Moonlight but each is colored with different gems.
