Nirrimi Firebrace and her boyfriend Matt Caplin live this beautiful little fairytale life full of wanderlust and love. Infatuated with the honesty and wisdom that spews from her pictures, I was amazed to read that she was my age. At fourteen she fell in love with a boy photographer (Matt) on the other side of the country and felt the need to impress him with her work. At the age of sixteen Nirrimi dropped out of high school, feeling that it did little for her. She stole her mothers credit card from her purse in the middle of the night and bought a flight to Melbourne Australia where she could be with Matt Caplin and their romance began. The young homeless couple traveled all over the world, staying mostly with strangers. Nirrimi used the money she won from international and national photo awards to buy equipment and flights. She moved to NYC and became the youngest fashion photographer signed to an agency. Soon after she became pregnant with her daughter Alba. Beyond her success as a photographer traveling internationally to shoot campaigns, she is a young mother, beautiful writer, and passionate girlfriend.
My favorite pictures of Nirrimi's are not her commercial work that she is recognized for but her honest and youthful images of her life. The pictures mostly focus on her one year old daughter and their travels. The colors enchant me. She can tell an entire story and alter a mood by her talent with colors. The night image shows her technical talent, very little noise in a very dark shot. Capturing the green of the grass below the girl and contrasting with the dark maroon of her pants. Contrasting colors seems popular in her work, as well as shallow depths of field (even though the images I chose don't really demonstrate that.) Her work is so mature yet really captures the beauty of being a child. I am so inspired by her and her story that I'm tempted to drop out of school and buy some plane tickets.
