Jeff Wall received his MA from the
University of British Columbia and has done solo exhibitions as well as group
exhibitions. Having displayed his work all over the world, Wall has also been
awarded the Hasselblad Award, has become Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada,
was named an Officer of the Order of Canada, and the Audain Prize for Lifetime
Achievement.
Although his work is mostly staged,
Jeff Wall’s photography captures people in everyday life that society may not
pay attention to. The fact that he does stage his work is interesting as well
because he has the creative ability to mimic the exact same thing he saw
earlier.
The first image is interesting
because of the color contrast used throughout the picture for example, the
subjects red sweatshirt contrasting with the green in his pants and the mural
in the background. The second picture depicts to be what appears to be a
homeless woman coming back to her home. It tugs at the viewers’ heart and
forces us to understand that they are people who do not come home to a warm
bed. The third picture is intriguing because the viewer doesn’t know exactly
what’s going on. Is he about to get beat up? Are those people there to help?
The unanswerable questions is what is compelling about this picture. I aspire
to have work that portrays the lives of people that society normally overlooks,
to allow those unique individuals to have their story told without society
assuming what their story is.
