Lydia Goldblatt –
Keeping Time
Most known for her Still Here series, Lydia Goldblatt has
received multiple awards for her work such as, Fundacion Botin Residency Award,
Magenta Flash Forward Award, and the International Jewish Artist of the Year
award. She received her Masters Degree from the London College of
Communications.
I enjoy Lydia Goldblatt’s work
because of how it forces you to think of the bigger picture and as to what
she’s trying to say with her pictures. She leaves her audience with a mystery
without giving away the intentions she has behind the image, leaving us still
guessing as to why and what she’s photographed.
The top left picture I enjoy because
it shows the perfect contrast between new and old. Although the same pair of
tights, one side seems newer then the other side and the other side shows a rip
that goes up the woman’s shin. The top right picture compels me because of the
contrast between the blue leotard against her skin and both against the
burgundy background. It forces your eyes to look at all aspects of the picture.
The bottom picture I enjoy because it’s taboo for ballet dancers to have their
hair down. Also, I enjoy the aquamarine background against the dark colors of
her sweater and the black strip in the background.
