Annie Leibovitz is an American Portrait photographer, who has been working in the photo industry since the early 70s, starting with Rolling Stone, and with the help of her unique portraits of artists, help define the magazines look. She was also noted to be the only woman to have held an exhibition at the London National Portrait Gallery.
The first photograph is a simple black and white portrait, but the subtleties of the breaking up of the background in the bottom left and top left corners drawn your eye back into the subject. The second photo is an extremely close cropped portrait, which makes good use of hair, and the red of the jacket collar to frame the face. The third photograph uses light to frame the subjects, and the red hair gives a nice look against the surface.
These photographs stick out to me because Annie Leibovitz has been one of the photographers that I have followed since I first picked up a camera. As well as many of my favorite musicians and actors have had their portraits made by Leibovitz. It's also incredibly important to acknowledge the amount of success she has had, and how she has paved the way for the female photographers in the united states.
