Weekly Artist Post

Kirsty Mackay

These photos are from Kirsty Mackay's book My Favorite Color Was Yellow. She focuses a lot on the use of color, specifically pink tones. Mackay also uses light to make her photos appear soft and dreamy. She mostly uses a shallow depth of field to control where the focus is- usually on the girl(s).

Mackay's book focuses on how the media and marketing uses the color pink to target young girls, and how the color pink is now synonymous for femininity. Mackay also believes that the color pink is used to trap girls from a young age into a typical gender role- one of "cheerful domesticity."

I really like the idea behind Kirsty Mackay's book- how one color can have so much meaning and influence on the way we think. I also like the use of light in Mackay's photos and how she uses it to make them seem soft. The images are very pretty but the message behind them is powerful- Mackay uses pretty pictures to show the values that are forced on girls so early.
