Lindsey Mott - Weekly Artist Post #4

Stefan Fuertbauer

The photographs above are from Stephan Fuertbauer's series "Eiterquellen". Knowing what I know now about photography, I'm going to assume that Fuertbauer used a tripod to take these photographs. Taken at night, there's a good chance that he would not be able to use a shutter speed small enough to hand hold while still maintaining the quality pictured above. Furthermore, since the majority of what you can see of the photograph is in focus, his aperture was probably significantly closed. Once again, I'm assuming he employs some kind of long exposure technique in these photographs in order for them to look the way they do.

"Eiterquellen" is a series of photographs taken of Viennese hotdog stands. In this series, Fuertbauer explores Viennese fast food culture. It is an interesting phenomenon that both the upper and lower classes eat at these stands, and Fuertbauer pokes fun at the gruff lingo used at these kinds of places ("Eiterquellen" literally means pus springs, and the term refers to a sausage filled with melted cheese).

Technically, these photographs speak to a lot of things we've been discussing in class. They demonstrate how using a tripod can minimize the "sacrifices" one has to make in order to get the picture. I find these pictures extremely interesting since Fuertbauer selected a subject matter that many might find mundane, and turned it into something culturally revealing.
