I chose Sam Shaw because of a recent infatuation with the concept of "pop art" and the early creation of Icons in the film industry. Shaw uses a combination of color and b&w shots to gather a large almost endless collection of images of the rich and the famous. Not only did he use them as models in their private lives, but Shaw followed them on screen and took a series of images of stars and starlets in character on screen mid filming. To me, this intermediary line of Cinema and Photography is his most powerful quality.
Shaw's most influential image is arguably the image he took of Marilyn Monroe having her skirt ruffled by hot air on a city street. By exploring the shift in mediums from Cinema to Photography, Shaw managed to bridge the gap of the arts and create powerful narratives of powerfully famous people both in and out of the screens limelight.
For me, Sam Shaw is one of the classic artists of the modern fame society, his images created a setting in which modern pop art could begin , Andy Warhol for instance used similar images to Shaw in many of his famed pop art images, especially of Monroe. This style of image has survived the years and become more and more a favorite style of current Hollywood photographers.
