Weekly Artist Post

Chelsea McNamara

Chelsea McNamara makes pictures in Monet's garden in France. She uses a double exposure to achieve this soft, dream-like effect that is reminiscent of Monet's paintings. Since these are taken outside during the day, she probably uses a low aperture to achieve high quality photos. McNamara uses an opened aperture to selectively focus on one flower, or she uses a closed aperture to focus on a field of flowers.

McNamara says this project is not about the flowers, but about Monet himself. By using a double exposure, her photos are similar to the Impressionist paintings that Monet created. McNamara's project is like an homage to the painter, but unique in that she uses her camera to emulate his style.

These pictures reminded me of Easter and they just seem happy. McNamara creates beautiful and playful images that are fun to look at. The double exposure forces your eye to keep looking to try and figure out the pictures. I love the colors and the softness of these pictures. They're a fun twist on flower pictures.
