Mary Pforr- Week 10 Artist post

Artist: Byron W
Photo Cred: http://provia.tumblr.com/

 i. Byron works with both film and digital, and experiments with quality of his images to present the messages he wants to speak. A lot of his digital work has a higher iso and a large amount of noise, where as his work in film has further study of light in the environments and a much lower iso/better quality. There is a constant understanding of aperture as to achieve a deep depth of field when a lot of what he makes photographs of is in low light- such as the ones above.
ii. Continuing off his technique use of light, Byron constantly makes photographs that seem to hone in on the use of artificial light in nature. In the photographs above, there is this incredible contrast of artificial to natural. The artificial highlights the things that are placed in nature, which is darkened by shadows and comes second. I think it is an interesting qay to show how a large part of humanity perceives spaces.
iii. Looking at Byron's work really helped me better understand ideas and concepts I try to achieve in my own work. I am very interested in how humanity interacts with nature and is ignorant to the fact it can destroy us yet provides us with everything we need. It also helped me see there can be times where low quality and high noise are useful. It's not just about achieving a high quality image- it's about making the photograph that is going to help you better understand your idea.
