Joshua Hoffine is a ‘horror photographer’ based out of Kansas. His pictures range from funny/b-movie type scary to downright frightening. While he does use editing in some of his pictures, he capitalizes on in-camera manipulation, like creating harsh shadows and silhouettes from specifically place lights and using strange angles to create optical illusions. He also creates elaborate sets that create eerie moods to each of his photographs and usually focuses on the irony in each scene, like a baby’s room with mold stains on the walls and floor.
Hoffine says that he sees his photos as much more about entertainment than any kind of commentary, but he does say that he’s interested in the “psychology of fear”. His use of mostly children in the photos adds a lot of different connotations to his work, such as questions about primal fears and ‘real-life’ monsters. His elaborate, almost movie set-like scenes, give each piece a completely different story and his knowledge and use of color add even more context and energy to the photographs. I was very drawn to these photos not only because I love horror, but his use of silhouette, shadow, and prop is very inspiring.
