1. Jen Lewis is a self proclaimed "conceptual artiest and menstrual designer". After switching from tampons/pads to a menstrual cup, she was able to create beautiful images that validate this particular female process. She and her husband work together with a simple studio set up at her toilet, or an aquarium set up.
2. I was drawn to these pictures because of the article title, Beauty in Blood. In some way they look to me like pictures from outer-space, and ironically the menstrual cycle does run the entire universe choosing when life will or won't be developed. I was initially interested in the way each blood formation has a flow, up to down or side to side. I also like how only one of the photos I've chosen resembles blood, the other two I would've never thought to have been blood, regardless menstrual blood.
3. Through these photos Lewis is showing how beautiful of a process menstruation is, but the shock people feel when they discover the images are menstrual blood represent the oppression that society places on the natural process. This project was devoted to changing the stigma that periods carry in society. These photos are intricate and complicated, much like a woman's body and processes, and are used by the artist to raise awareness.
