1. Which of the artist's many technical choices are of interest to you and why?
Chen chose to document the lives of young Chinese citizens in the more desolate areas of northeast China.
This area of the country was more desolate and had less of a population density and Chen wanted to capture the vastness of this cold area while showing how the younger generations dealt with growing up there. All the images are tied together by the fact that there is little to no color except for carefully executed details in the composition in order to bring a small amount of life back into the composition.
2. What do you believe are the artist's conceptual work and/or thematic intentions?
Chen is trying to attempt to show how the a live in this region behave and how they begin to interact amongst themselves and the outside world. How the people live in these desolate and freezing conditions. How regardless of living conditions people continue to find a way to take it a day at a time.
3. How do you personally respond to these choices and intents?
I like the message that is being told here but personally I feel like there could have been better ways of capturing some of the portrait shots, rather than having them pose she could have documented the way they actually interacted and rather than attempting to shoot for a staged shot. In cases like these it is good to take genuine emotions and tell stories of the subjects. The land scapes tie together very well seeing that they have a good matching color tones and the color in the middle brings the images together.
