1) Which of the artist's many technical choices are of interest to you and why?
I really admire all of Jones's work, she mainly captures candid shots that have a variety of colors. All of her shots are very bright and vivid. In her series, "Umbra", all of her candid shots of people barely show their faces. Jones utilizes lighting and composition in order to hide or manipulate her subjects' face.
2) What do you believe are the artist's conceptual or thematic intentions?
I believe her intentions are to purposefully hide and manipulate these people's faces. I believe she is trying to capture images of a family, of her own family. There are shots of older men and women who could be considered her grandparents, and there are children as well as young teenagers and adults. Jones had the intentions of distorting her own image or memory of family.
3) How do you personally respond to these choices and intentions?
I really appreciate Jones's work, especially since they're all beautifully framed candid shots. The bright saturated colors really appeal to me. Most of her shots have fairly simple compositions but her use of color and lighting enhances her images. The way she distorts or hides each subject is very visually appealing to me as well.
