Kirsty
Mitchell’s fine arts photography and storytelling abilities never cease to
capture me. Her conceptual eye and attention to detail through rigorous and
lengthy creation of costumes and props are a few reasons for her insanely
successful imagery. Although, some of my favorite pieces inside the
“Wonderland”
collection are the smaller details, like the little wooden boat
the purple woman is clutching. Overall, the idea of hand creating an image prior to post processing through fashion and set design, I believe is pure genius. What ever happened to sets? Lastly, her choice for high contrast and direct lighting
on the characters is another technical decision I greatly appreciate, well considered decisions on every level.
Within
Kirsty’s “Wonderland” child-like world from her mother’s stories she would read
to her, Kirsty has beautiful reimagined how this world would appear now as she
has grown and changed. Furthermore, she allows for a sense of curiosity within
the viewer to expand upon her ideas within their own mind. She breaks the
stillness of a photograph with an immense sense of movement and depth. Metaphorically
the images explode into life or a new form. Every detail considered, makeup, costume,
color, and passion especially, can be felt within every image.
Upon
finding her series I experienced a change in my desires for a moving and
compelling photography that sweeps you away into another world. I can’t help but
instantly engage each photograph deeply in a way I have never experienced
prior. Simply put, her photography takes my breathe away and don’t care to take
it back. She has recklessly given her life to her art and wants nothing more
than to fulfill a loss with beauty in memory of her loving mother who passed away battling cancer. Knowing her
passion and beautiful creations come from a place of love and loss in order to fulfill herself with her mother gone,
is a noble drive.
