1) Which of the artist’s many technical choices are of interest to you and why?
Im very interested in the way Ren Hang used flash lighting for most of his photographs and the saturation and vibrancy of the colors as a result of that. I also am interested in the subject matters he photographs with mostly Asian women and how we rarely ever see that in most main stream art. He also tended to use very different and interesting subjects for his photographs such as a peacock i.e. the last photo.
2) What do you believe are the artist’s conceptual and/or thematic intentions?
I believe Ren's intentions are to get the most color saturated and harsh flash photography he can without washing out the subject matter or model. There seems to be a very obvious theme with all of his photography that is a recurring and perfected practice. Even though you could completely take his photos out of context and put them together you could see the varying traits and similarities between each one of them.
3) How do you personally respond to these choices and intents?
I think they're very pleasing to look at and study, I find Ren Hangs photography to be well coordinated to the point of every photo being perfected to the very last detail. I think the vibrancy of color and details of objects adds to the photos to create something visually interesting and pleasing. Discovering Ren's photography has caused me to become interested in harsh flash photography like he did. I would definitely love to try to recreate my own version of his style.
Ren Hang RIP
