1) Technical decision and why I'm compelled/moved by said tech decisions.
The rawness and realness of each photograph is what had drawn me to this series. Each image is unedited and unplanned, revealing each person's exhausted psyches. The tone of each photograph is slightly cold and desaturated, everything left unkempt and disorganized. There are many other candid shots of half dressed people with messy hair, going on about their day. All of these details portrayed contribute to describing their empty atmosphere, as if missing something. Other photographs contain people in isolation with such tired expressions on their face. These technical decisions stand out to me in the most simple way because they display such genuine sensitive moments we try so hard to hide.
2) What I believe the artist's intentions and concept are.
Singer's intentions were clear to reveal the rawness of reality and ordinary lives. She fights the stereotypical "happy" and "successful" lifestyle we all usually try to imitate through the use of photographs, video, and social media. Singer captures such lonely pictures of her family and friends who have experienced much trauma. They all have such an empty look in their eyes, expressing deep thought or an exhausted gaze. I believe Singer wants to bring awareness to how the normal working class truly live. She wants to exterminate the idea that all people are equally happy, privileged, and at peace with themselves. These images being untouched also help deliver this message. Nothing is hidden, the colors remain dull, and the imperfections stay imperfect. Danna Singer executes this cold tender concept very well by her use of unedited candid photos.
3) How do I personally respond to the intentions and concepts.
I absolutely value the intentions Singer had for this series. She demonstrates the reality of the normal working class, showing their true emotion. The first idea that many people receive upon hearing "photos" usually is of something pleasant or pretty. Singer completely opposes this idea, showing the audience the truth. I respect that Singer sought out these photographs to only be of her hometown, containing her family and friends. It brings in a certain intimacy for the audience. She wants them to know what she experiences on a daily basis, connecting others to her personal lifestyle. Being able to relate to another person or expose such vulnerability on such a genuine level brings originality to Danna Singer.
