1) which of the artist’s many technical choices are of interest to you and why?
Nobuyoshi Araki chose to shoot with polaroids, which I find to be an incredible and precise choice to shoot these very intimate images in.
Polaroids come out right after you take the picture, which is almost as quick as digital, except you have the image in a tangible form immediately.
The reason why it interested me is that the nature of the photos, and the intimacy that polaroids have, are quite similar.
2) what do you believe are the artist’s conceptual and/or thematic intentions?
I know very little about Japanese Culture, except that many things are forbidden or shown shame in their community.
I researched nudity/pornography in the Japanese culture and was very shocked by what I read about.
I still was unsure about what knowledge is true or not, so I am unsure if my belief of the conceptual intentions of the artist will be changed due to ignorance or lack of knowledge.
None the less, I believe the intentions of the artist were to show a more intimate side BDSM culture.
3) how do you personally respond to these choices and intents?
I find it very beautiful and it’s what drew me to this artist specifically.
The very last image specifically is what drew me to this artist.
I've never really seen someone tied up in bondage with a traditional Kimono on.
