Selasi Fynn - Weekly Artist Post

Viktoria Sorochinski

Victoria Sorochinski has worked on a few projects, but is widely known for her series titled Anna and Eve, which the pictures above are from. She followed this mother and daughter from 2005 to 2012. While all the pictures in this project were staged, Sorochinski tries to capture the evolving relationship of Anna and Eve. She is clearly not afraid of color and portrays a pleasant clash with warm and cool colors in some of her pictures.

This specific series is obviously about the relationship between a mother and her daughter. Looking through all the pictures in Anna and Eve I see that Sorochinski picks up on the youthfulness of not only the girl, but of her mother. This can also be said for both Anna and Eve in terms of maturity. In this series it looks like Sorochinksi is, in a way, asking her audience to not necessarily question but to recognize the balance of playfulness and maturity or lack thereof of their own relationships.

Looking at some of her work from her other projects, I noticed that Sorochinski uses color in a few different ways. In the series titled Daddy, I feel like the color is definitely a lot warmer than some of the pictures in Anna and Eve. The pictures I like the most are from her series titled The Space Between. I really like the way she incorporated food and plants into her pictures to communicate her point about connecting her internal and external spaces. I'm not really sure why she chose to do that, but for some reason I like it a lot.
